It doesn’t take to long to realize what an impact Dalla Terra Winery Direct had on Memphis last week when they swept into town for two days. Dalla Terra is celebrating the 20th anniversary by touring 7 cities in the U.S. with 15 vintners of the 19 wineries in the company.

Just look at the local wine blogs. Fredric Koeppel wrote about one of the wineries, Marchesi di Gresy on his blog, http://biggerthanyourhead.net/2010/05/09/dolcetto-nebbiolo-from-marchesi-di-gresy/. Michael Hughes also wrote an article for the Memphis Flyer, http://www.memphisflyer.com/memphis/italian-style/Content?oid=2067956.

The thing that impressed me so much at the tasting is the fact that the actual winemakers were there, standing behind their very own wine, telling stories about their family and the land, not just the wine. Alberto di Gresy was telling me about the fog in the mornings surrounding his home and all he can see are the very tops of the tallest trees. Luca from Vietti talked about his Grandmother teaching Thomas Keller how to cook pasta, to vacationing in Puglia, and then he came alive talking about his family’s wine. I looked around and there was a crowd of people standing around the table and listening. The funniest thing is that I thought the Owner, Brian Larky, was from Puglia, at first, because he happened to be standing at the table with the Puglian wines.  They are just a great bunch of people that seem happy and comfortable with what they are doing and I like that.

Here’s a little secret about me, if an Italian vintner comes to town, I will buy their wine. Because, whenever an Italian winemaker gets on plane and comes to little ol’ Memphis to tell you about their wine, it is going to be great. That is why I carry Lionello Marchesi’s wines, Carpineto’s, and why Bari will offer wines from 11 of the 19 wineries in the Dalla Terra group. These wines are brought in by Delta Wholesale.
