Bari Ristorante e Enoteca  hosted its first ever Slow Food Dinner titled “Primavera in Puglia” on Tuesday March 29th.

The five course dinner was locally sourced from Urban Farms as well as from the Slow Food producers in Italy, paired with five Italian wines.

Robin Rodriguez, the leader of the local chapter of Slow Foods was th
ere to talk about the Slow Food movement, as well as, Carolina Sanchez who is the official spokesperson for Slow Food Rome for the United States and is a student at Rhodes College. Mary Phillips from Urban Farms was also there to talk about the farm to fork experience.

What is Slow Food?

It all started in Italy in 1989 to resist a McDonalds opening near the Spanish Steps in Rome. Today Slow Food is a global, grassroots organization with supporters in 150 countries around the world who are linking the pleasure of good food with a commitment to their community and the environment. A non-profit member-supported association, Slow Food was founded in 1989 to counter the rise of fast food and fast life, the disappearance of local food traditions and people’s dwindling interest in the food they eat, where it comes from, how it tastes and how our food choices affect the rest of the world. Today, Slow Food has over 100,000 members joined in 1,300 convivia – our local chapters – worldwide, as well as a network of 2,000 food communities who practice small-scale and sustainable production of quality foods.

It IS the very same thing that people in our own community are doing, like Cooper-Young Community Farmers Market, Urban Farms, Eat Local, I Love Memphis, Project Green Fork, Memphis Farmers Market, Midtown Farmers Market, & so many others, but on a Worldwide scale. In fact, Slow Food Memphis has been around for years but not many people have heard about them or know what it is. Up to this point, restaurants have not had any involvement, except for fundraisers.

We hope to change all of that, not with one dinner of course, but it’s a great start. We would love to see restaurants, that source locally and ethically, be able to become members to support this movement.
